The American Planning Association recently designated Ocean Drive as one of the Top 10 Streets through the APA’s “Greatest Places in America” program (2007), which is being launched this year. This program has been designed to bring national recognition to places of exceptional character, quality, and planning in America. Places will be identified in three categories including streets, neighborhoods, and (in 2008) public spaces.
Ocean Drive was selected for “it’s unique architectural legacy, citizen led historic protection efforts, city initiated mixed uses, pedestrian oriented restoration and redevelopment and on going public support”. The APA’s “Great Places” offer better choices for where people want to be enjoyable, safe, and desirable places, not only to visit, but to live and work every day. Ocean Drive was selected out of more than 80 suggestions evaluated by a national Task Force of experts in the planning field.
