Miami’s luxury private enclave, Fisher Island, purchased thousands of coronavirus tests from a Miami healthcare provider to use for their residents and staff.
Fisher Island, an exclusive enclave of South Florida known as America’s most affluent zip code, purchased the rapid COVID-19 blood test kits from the University of Miami Health System, according to the Miami Herald.
After a few days of testing on the island, the results mirror the unfortunate hypothesis of the study. There are more positive people out there than we knew about. The virus may have circulated in South Florida for longer than we appreciate. You can be positive and not enjoy having any symptoms at all. Nonetheless, the tester said they had not yet found any evidence of community spread on the island, though it was noted it was still early in the process.
The island ordered 1,800 testing kits at $17 each, enough that every resident and staff member could be tested. Employees who maintain the island’s property and patrol its streets will also receive tests. UHealth has a clinic on Fisher Island whose doctors have helped administer the COVID-19 tests.
“This is what the Fisher Island residents wanted. Our physicians ordered it for them, they paid for it themselves.”
– UHealth spokeswoman Lisa Worley
A yearly membership to the Fisher Island Club — the management company that oversees 216 acres including private beaches and an award-winning golf course — costs about $250,000.
